On Comparison and Being 'The Only One'

August 19th, 2022
I increasingly find myself in conversations with business types who have come across my story (i.e. high-achiever who feels nothing — and deeply judges herself for it — so wants more and finds herself on a journey to follow her passion) and felt compelled to reach out — because they feel the same, and they thought they were the only one.

Minimal Update #1

August 19th, 2022
After weeks of testing and two surgeries (IV port placement and biopsy), I was diagnosed with stage two lymphoma. The treatment is chemotherapy — every other week for the next six months. I have a very good prognosis. I feel very blessed and ready to continue this journey.

Collect is the new Like

August 6th, 2022
Likes are the backbone of web2 social media. Often expressed as a heart, they’ve taken on meanings of their own. They’re as much ammo as they are currency—invoking support as much as they do jealousy or a cold shoulder. More recently, a like has come to mean about as much as “lol” entails actual laughter. No one’s really laughing out loud. With so many opportunities to like something (see Kyle Chayka’s Like Inflation), the gesture has pretty much lost its significance altogether.

Building Market Microstructure for NFTs

August 7th, 2022
I’ve recently been exploring the evolving market microstructure around NFTs, and a recent discussion on the merits of platforms like Sudoswap has highlighted some of the inherent tension between the current NFT audience and the future of the asset class. There is a massive wave of platforms coming that bring more robust market structure oriented towards traders to NFTs, and soon, other esoteric assets. The evolution of NFT market structure provides a helpful understanding of where all markets are trending, over time, as a result of technology innovation and new models for financialization.

zkSNARKs vs zkSTARKs: a primer

Trying out a longer form article this time to allow a deeper dive into some areas of blockchain research. There are a lot of articles on zero knowledge proofs, and a lot of research papers on SNARKs or STARKs, but very little bridging the intermediate gap.

What We Can Learn from Decentralized Community Building

July 21st, 2022
Over the past two years, we’ve witnessed a meteoric rise in the power of decentralized community-building. In a crypto-native, ownership-first era, users are opting to spend their time in digital places that offer not just a better user experience, but more autonomy and influence, more economic incentives, more connection, and ultimately, more fun.

Open Writing

July 19th, 2022
One of the concepts thrown around in web3 is “token-gating” content. Like many things in web3, it seems to be taken for granted that it is a good idea, but I’m not sure I agree. Token-gating when it comes to content doesn’t seem functionally different than having a paywall. This post is a few of my thoughts on the topic through the lens of writing on the internet.

Web3 & Decentralization Explained

When I first started paying attention to crypto, one of the first things I kept asking questions about was why I should care about decentralization. The News

July 1st, 2022
On June 23rd, 2022 I was given a tentative diagnosis of lymphoma. I received the call in the morning while walking to get my morning coffee, oat cortado is usually my choice. I had gone to see the doctor a few days before for a strange pain near my liver. The doctor told me that she looked up the CT scans, and unfortunately, it looked like it was lymphoma. I sat down on the concrete steps in front of a stranger's home and received the news, as the call went on I began to cry more and more.

Web3 Use Cases: Today

June 23rd, 2022
Crashes aren’t only painful because of price declines, although it’s never fun to see your account balances slashed relentlessly, day after day. Crashes are also painful because belief drains from the market as quickly as cash does. And those who never believed in the first place rush in to fill the void with a chorus of schadenfreude-laced I told you so’s.

An Introduction to Quadratic Voting

May 30th, 2022
Quadratic voting is a method of collective voting which dictates the strength of a voter's feeling, depending on how many votes they allocate to a choice. It differs from the single-choice of voting; instead, you have x amount of votes to give out.

DAOs are collaborative networks which are likely to have a unique role in the future. To determine this role, you need to be able to look beyond what is happening today. Like a toddler taking its first steps, the DAOs of today are immature, unsteady and likely to stumble.

Games and blockchain

May 17th, 2022
Preface: Usually, for my blog posts, I just write stream-of-consciousness rambles, and don’t even bother proofreading. This is different - this is the first time I actually put in some effort. Why? To celebrate Mirror launching Writing NFTs on Optimism. I have no idea why anyone would buy NFTs for this post, but if you do: 100% of the proceeds will be directed straight to the Gitcoin multi-sig for public goods funding. I’d love to hear feedback - should I repeat this for my older posts, and future posts?

Culture in Progress: Building On-Chain Social Capital

December 1st, 2021
Crypto, Culture, and Society members recently joined a session by web3 polymath Ameer Carter, aka Sirsu, to explore how social capital operates. Using real-world models of collective action and examples of web3 projects that bridge the gaps between social, cultural, and economic capital, he advanced a compelling argument for using blockchain technologies toward attribution of creative works to their creators. Below is a recap and response from our community.
